How Does Active Noise Cancellation Work?
We explain the idea behind ANC and the difference between over-ear and in-ear models.
Active noise cancellation (ANC) works by using microphones on the headphones to listen to ambient sound and generate a wave in the exact opposite phase. The two waves cancel each other out and the hum reaching your ears drops.
Where is it most effective?
ANC is excellent with low-frequency, constant sounds such as aircraft engines, air conditioning and traffic rumble. For sudden, higher-frequency sounds like voices or a slammed door its effect is limited, and passive isolation from the ear cushions takes over.
Over-ear or in-ear?
Over-ear models offer stronger isolation and longer battery life thanks to their large cushions. In-ear models win on portability; choosing the right silicone tip size greatly improves cancellation.
We recommend over-ear models for long flights and open offices, and in-ear models for sport and everyday commuting.
